Clinical Herbalist Immune Support for COVID-19

As referenced in Guido’s Week 6 class, here are the recommendations he discussed concerning COVID-19 (Coronavirus): Immune Support NOTES:

We know very little about this virus, its seasonality, and its transmission. It does seem to be more contagious than the flu, and does affect those over age 60 with heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes more significantly. There is no evidence that any of the classic herbs we use for cold and flu “treat” the virus. Instead of treatment, we have been focusing on good hygiene and prevention by strengthening immune function.

PLEASE take care of yourself: good food, good hydration, and most importantly GOOD sleep. If stress around all of this is an issue, consider adaptogens like American ginseng (if available organic) or Eleuthero (“Siberian” ginseng). IF you suspect infection (dry cough and fever are the most common symptoms, with little nasal congestion), CALL your doctor/Emergency room and ask for directions on how to proceed.

  1. Astragalus and medicinal mushrooms, esp. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum/tsugae/oregonensis). Relatively high amounts: 1 tsp. Astragalus tincture 2x/d, 7-12 g Astragalus total in caps/powder/decoction daily. 2 mL mushroom extract and/or blends, or 3-4 g mushroom extract powder, or 4-5 g mushrooms decocted daily.

2. Lung support herbs include Pleurisy root (Asclepias tuberosa), Licorice root (caution w/ high blood pressure), Mullein leaf, Elecampane root, Balloon Flower root (Platycodon grandiflorum), Usnea spp.

3. Warming aromatic diaphoretics are theoretically a good idea: Ginger, Angelica, Lomatium, Ligusticum (Osha – caution – endangered)

4. CONSIDER AVOIDING Elderberry for those at greater risk to reduce the risk of over-stimulation of an immune reaction. Elderberry lectins, not present in other berries, ramp up immune function and inflammatory cytokine production, which is THEORETICALLY a concern as the cause of death is connected to sepsis and cytokine storm in vulnerable folks (See this paper from China as reference).

Treatment NOTE: Needs to be in consultation / coordination with the healthcare establishment. DO NOT “go it alone” on this one, especially with higher-risk populations. The virus can cause symptoms to progress into a danger zone quickly. Don’t delay asking for support. Key Symptoms are dry cough and fever, though this can vary. CALL your healthcare provider(s). FOLLOW their directions.

1. One formula (Shuang Huang Lian) is receiving attention for herbal TREATMENT of the virus, but keep in mind it is often used as an injection. It is Baikal Skullcap root (Scutellaria baikalensis), Forsythia fruit, and Honeysuckle flower (Lonicera japonica). We know nothing about other herbs for treatment. Get help, and once you have a plan, consider options

2, 3 and 4 listed above if practical and safe to do so.

Hand & Surface Sanitizer (2 options)

NOTE: Hand washing with regular soap and water for 20-30 seconds is BEST. Sanitizers are an OK alternative, and also a way to clean doorknobs, surfaces, etc.

Option #1 – Alcohol-based (basic recipe) • 2 parts Alcohol (*see below) • 1 part Aloe Vera gel • 5-10 drops your choice of essential oil per ounce of sanitizer (optional, to improve odor). Dispense into squirt bottles. Squirt a pea-sized amount on your hands, rub in, and allow to dry. *Key consideration: The alcohol you use can be rubbing (isopropyl) or “regular” (ethyl, or ethanol), but must be at least 90% (180 proof). Concentrations are listed on the bottle (eg. at the drugstore, rubbing alcohol should say “91% isopropyl alcohol”). Don’t use 60% isopropyl or anything lower than 90%. Alcohol-based sanitizers need to be at least 60-70% alcohol.

Option #2 – Alcohol-free (Thymox) FDA/EPA have approved “Thymox” (a solution of 0.25% thymol) as a coronaviruseffective disinfectant. We can recreate a 0.25% thymol solution using these ingredients: • Water, 29 mL (about 1 fluid ounce). Using distilled water is best, but any clean, fresh water will do. • Gum Arabic, a dispersant, 300 mg • Benchmark Thyme essential oil, 0.8 mL (Consistently high thymol concentration, which is assayed. See this link for more information and additional distributors.) Add the essential oil to the Gum Arabic and mix thoroughly. Add the paste to the water and shake well. Pour into a spray bottle and dispense by spraying. Rub into the hands and allow to dry.

BREAD!!!!!

I am so excited! Stupidly excited! I am happy happy happy! I have craved a slice of homSo excitedemade bread for a while now…just never tried making it. This week I finally did it. I decided to try gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free, BREAD – just quit putting it off; quit buying it, and see if I could make a loaf of bread!

I did it!!!!!! It is beautiful.

When you have a sensitivity to stuff, these little things make all the difference! I am dancing and laughing! Like a little kid excited!! It works! It is real bread!

Here’s the recipe I used:

Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Nut-free, Soy-free Bread
adapted from Bob’s Red Mill Sandwich Bread

Ingredients:

  • 1-1/2 cups Milk (warmed cow, rice, soy milk, or coconut milk)
  • 2-1/4 tsp Active Dry Yeast
  • 3 cups Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1 Flour
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 3/4 cup Eggs (must measure 3/4 cup)*
  • 1/4 cup Olive Oil (or other preferred oil)
  • 1 tsp Cider Vinegar
  • 3/4 tsp Sea Salt

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, add the yeast to warm milk and let sit until yeast begins to foam (about 5 minutes). Meanwhile, in a large mixing bowl of a heavy-duty stand mixer, combine all remaining ingredients. Add yeast/milk mixture and mix on medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping down sides of bowl with a spatula, if needed. If you do not have a stand mixer, an electric hand mixer will also work.
  2. Place dough in a greased 9 x 5-inch nonstick pan. Smooth top of dough with a spatula. Cover and let rise in a warm place (75-80°F) until dough is level with the top of the pan (approximately 30-40 minutes).
  3. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 60-65 minutes. Do not under-bake. To prevent over-browning, cover with foil after the first 15 minutes of baking. To test for doneness, tap loaf with a fingernail. A crisp, hard sound indicates a properly baked loaf.
  4. Remove from oven; turn loaf out of pan and cool thoroughly on a wire rack before slicing.

MY NOTES:

  • I used canned coconut milk so I had the thick cream and water well mixed before using it in the recipe. I think the cream helps a lot!
  • ALSO, IMPORTANT: take three eggs and blend them a bit, then measure, as in the instructions; this is a better measure than just measuring whole eggs.
  • Where I am at in AR, It took about 30-40 minutes to rise to just above the pan, and it took about 30 minutes to bake. So, just watch the baking and when it is browned on top, and the internal temperature is 160 or above, it is done
  • The key to this whole thing is this Bob’s Red Mill 1 to 1 Baking Flour. This special blend of gluten-free flours and starches makes it easy to transform traditional recipes into gluten-free recipes – no additional specialty ingredients or custom recipes required. It is made to be a direct replacement for all-purpose flour.

It is perfect!!!!!! So good!!!!!!! I love bread!

Be who you are

This is not your typical encouragement write-up on being the person you were meant to be. I will give you some food for thought that is not main stream, and is very out of the box, but should be the normal thinking.

We were created, man was created, out of the dust of the Earth and given life and breath from the very mouth of the Creator. It was good. Did you get that? When the tree of knowledge of good and evil entered the picture, so did the lies that we are no longer good. Fear entered first and foremost. Fear and shame are the foundation to all that is not good, all that is not of the creation in the beginning. We were given a choice. That is all. It was a choice. Man did not become evil. The flesh did not become evil. The mind did not become evil. The man allowed the fear and shame to take over his very own body, mind and soul. Yahweh constantly showed that there is a way to stay within what we are create to be. The stuff that was breathed into us at creation was not taken out of us when the other tree was eaten. This is a key point.

We are made in HIS very image. WE are sons and daughters of the Most High. We are good. Sin can take over but it is not who we are.

We are meant for so much more. We have been given the promise of Eternal Life. We must live that kingdom here on Earth. We have the breathe of the Father in us and through us. We can get the fear and shame out. All sin and all evil can be overcome. All of our impurities, all of our transgressions, all of our health issues, all of our Earth’s pollution, is from fear and shame. We are not evil first. Evil takes over us when we allow it in. Evil is the result of not being what we are meant to be.

Be what you are meant to be. Be who you are. Live the life you have been given to live in Messiah. Use the breath of the Almighty that was breathed into you and never taken out.

I could make this longer, but I want you to digest the truth you have just read. Let’s have a conversation.

BE well. Be healthy. Be YOU.

Teaching/Sharing/Passing on/Empowering

I love teaching. Teaching runs in my blood. I love to empower people. I love teaching most because I learn.

Would you like to make sense of the food allergies and sensitivities, and find holistic options within your budget? Food allergies rock your world! They rocked mine. In this class I will help you take an active and empowering role in your daily struggle with this “sensitive” topic (pun intended).

Would you like to turn around a picky eater, know where to save money for healthy snacks, how to minimize junk and create whole food eaters, be prepared on the go without stress, learn how to travel with food, and create habits to last? This is not just for the now, but for the future.  ALL HEALTH now will reap good or disaster in the future. I have a class for that!
Learn why making even simple menu adjustments can lead to kids who feel calmer, sleep better, wake up easier, weigh less, have tantrums less, and study more.

Do you have a love/hate relationship with cooking and finding creative ways to make a meal? Do you want to have meals ready for on the go? Do you want to learn how to pack and cook on a trip?  The crock pot can become your best pal in the kitchen. I will also show some things for travel with a crock or an insta-pot or aroma steamer (the fast crock pot) —traveling with these is the best thing I have done for saving time and money on a trip and eating healthier.

Do you want to learn about desserts without sugar, honey, molasses, or artificial sweeteners…YES! they can still be sweet and delicious. (Tasting some goodies will be part of the class) Cure your sugar craving and need. Create new habits. Learn the empowerment you have inside you.

Would you like to learn massage techniques for calming, healing, bonding, making stronger and smarter babies.  Gather some friends and set a plan to take a 4 week course

DO YOU ALL GET THE IDEA? I have a class for many things. These are just a few of what I can do. If you have an idea for a class you would like me to put together, please contact me to ask. I CAN BRING THESE classes to your group, in your location (in my local area). I can do many of these classes, even the baby massage classes, online for those long distance.

What is Wrong With This Article?

First, read this article – Apricot Seeds: Cancer Treatment or Danger to Health? Then come back, and we can discuss it.

I will go over some things wrong and see if you all picked up on the same junk.
Apricot seeds
One, the title of the article is a red flag right off. The place it is coming from is the first clue (pharma organization).

Two, the article goes through and states all the great benefits and proof of the benefits of these seeds nutritionally.  They know they are good for you to eat.

Three, the article states many companies and way to use the seeds for food, and none of those are shut down or given negative words…that is huge! They state that the seeds eaten raw are dangerous, but you can grind them into flour and eat them in other forms!! Catch that?! One has to be very careful reading these articles run by the pharmaceutical agencies.

Four, the article states that 50-60 raw seeds is the researched amount of amygdalin/cyanide toxicity leading to death, and toxicity in lower amounts.  It lists other foods and seeds with this amygdalin (converts to cyanide) element in them but does not give them negative credit. It goes into the dangers of cyanide and what it can do. The article never proves this.

Five, after the article praises all the benefits, it consistently uses phrases, “There is currently no evidence…”, and “There is no scientific evidence…”, which are bogus statements.  Evidence is and always has been there for all fruit seeds to have these cancer-fighting properties, but the FDA and other organizations cannot make money off of this stuff and therefore put things like this to the side, disregard it, and create articles like this to sway the common man from the truth. Proof of this is in stories like the one in the article, where a man found an important component, B17, and then the FDA decided not to allow it to be sold in the states (they know it works but cannot get the profit from it because those men do not sell out to them, etc., another subject all together).

Six, the end of the article gives the clue that they just ate their words of “no evidence”, when they state, “There may be promise with using chemicals from apricot kernels…”; this just proves that they do know the truth, and they do have all the evidence and are trying to find a way to make it theirs.

Watch out for this kind of junk. Be careful reading all things. Prove all things. This article made me laugh all the way through, how they contradicted and ate their words all the way through, and tried to justify everything with partial evidence (not all sides).

OH, BY THE WAY, it is helping immensely to eat these seeds and kernels from fruit to rid my Alpha-gal. It is staying part of my protocol. Ask about my protocol.

BE healthy, be true, Take action, re-write your story.

Wrestling and Revealing (continuing the study of Job and life)

The Bible after Google: Evangelicals consider impact of technology on Bible readingOK, here we are again. I have some new thoughts as I have been through more of Job. (for my thoughts on the first part of Job see Truth Gets Real)

Job’s friends get very argumentative and aggressive toward the end of the conversation. They seemed right on in the beginning, and seemed like they are sent to reveal to Job something he never saw in his life, YET,  their conversations between each other and with Job are strikingly changing as one reads on and on into the book.

I feel like Job at this time in my life. I feel like all the work I have done to be healthy, eat healthy, think healthy, has been for naught. I then think of Job. He reveals what I feel – well, not quite as dramatic and not quite the loss – but, not eating mammal meat and dairy and nuts is life changing and harsh in my mind, and knowing that I can come in contact with something unknowingly every time I am out and about has set in me a fear I cannot seem to quench.  I am unsettled with what the purpose is in all of this mess of mineral depletion and deleted foods from my diet from a tiny tick carrying a mammal protein my body will not accept.   I cannot blame the Creator of all things. I cannot blame my lifestyle. I cannot blame anything really.

This is one of those “there are no answers” situations.  I have to be OK with the not knowing, move on to the healing, and know I can now be a light to others with it. None of this makes things any easier for the mind, heart, and soul.

One of the best renditions of Job comes out of a book called Inspired by Rachel Held Evens, where she screen writes Job, the friends, and Yahweh into a cafeteria scene in our modern times.  Job is a revealing that life is a way and the way has ups, downs, deserts and promised lands, and the way is not unscathed.

Truth Gets Real

The time to read Job is not when you are well, and all seems good in life. The time to read Job is when you are in a deep trial and loss in life.

Last night, as I read, I asked the Almighty to help me understand I John 1-5. I am stumped to some things in there. This morning I had a deep need to read Job instead, a book I have not read in quite some time, or just the ending.  I have read the first 10 chapters.   His friends came and sat with him, said nothing, to comfort him, which is what they needed to keep on doing and say little. They had messages and opinions, but they knew the temperament of Job, and they knew that he was upright in all his ways and wise.  When they spoke, the Bible translations want to belittle them and say that they were not helping, because Job was anguished by their words and became worse each time they spoke. YET, there is purpose in all they said and did. I am hearing and seeing the faith of Job, who is struggling and wrestling with Yahweh in his innocent anguish; he admits they are telling some truth but he knows he does not fit into it and will not give in to it, but he cannot figure out just why he is not giving in and why he does not fit in to the common mold of what his friends say–what he knows most fall into.  He is in pain, angry,  humiliated, brought down, removed from normal life as it was, and feeling tortured.  He is asking for revealing; this revealing is coming forth by a cause which Job will never know .   His friends are doing what Job had done with them so many times before.  The tables are being turned.  But, Job was a good, righteous man, not perfect, but not deserving of anything he is going through.  Job is a fault in the bible to us, right in the middle, to show us that life is not all cut and stacked with answers to everything.

I will continue to read Job this week.  I believe I will see truth in it I never saw before, only because I am in the middle of a physical and spiritual battle of my own.  I believe I have something still to see in order to fully heal from this AG and other allergy weeds that have developed in my healthy body and rocked my world.  I am anguished by the constant foods and products I cannot use or eat or even be around.  I am puzzled by the healing I thought I had, and now feel I never really had, or have I lost it somehow. I have lived a healthy lifestyle, and yet I find myself with a body that shows deterioration that does not fit into the “healthy” lifestyle results I had in mind.

OH, about John, I have not been back to John yet, but maybe I needed to wrestle with it also for a while; this is not a bad thing but what we are meant to do with the Word.

Rejoice in affliction, and allow revealing. It is real. It does prick the deepest part of the soul.
